3 Ways to Fix a Slow Draining Sink

It’s quite common to have a slow draining sink problem every now and then. Hair and soap deposits get stuck inside the drain and prevent water from flowing smoothly. You can take a few precautionary measures to prevent this problem from occurring again. In the meanwhile, grab your tools and learn how to fix your sink with these tips.

Fixing a Slow Draining Sink

Method 1

For this first method, you’ll have to try to clean out hair and debris stuck in the P trap. This is the P-shaped part of the pipe that runs under your sink. Before you take off the P trap, put a shallow bucket or a plastic box under the trap to catch water and debris.

With a set of big pliers, unscrew the collars of the P trap. Don’t exert a lot of pressure while doing this as they can break. Before pulling the P trap out, allow the water to drain into your bucket.

Carefully remove the P trap and clean out the inside. Check the ends of the other connecting pipes for hair or blockages.

Also, clean out the pop-up area by unscrewing the nut it’s attached to. The pop-up is a type of drain that traps hair and soap deposits. You have to clean this part if you have a slow draining sink.

Method 2

The next way to clear out blockages is to use a pipe drain cleaning tool. These tools are cheap and they get the job done in less than 5 minutes. Simply insert the drain cleaning tool into the drain and wiggle it around to get it past the drain stopper. Don’t force it in or it might get stuck. Once you manage to put it in, carefully pull it out and get rid of the debris that comes out of the drain.

Method 3

This is one of the easiest ways to fix a slow draining sink. Measure half a cup of baking soda and pour it over the drain. If it doesn’t go in, use a cotton ear bud to push it down the drain. Next, pour half a cup of white vinegar into the drain. You’ll see a lot of fizz at this stage. Leave the solution for approximately 5-10 minutes, before flushing it down with a litre of boiling hot water. Your sink should now return to normal.

One thing you should remember is to avoid sending harsh chemicals down the drain. They mix with sewer water and end up contaminating our ecosystem. Use homemade cleaning agents when possible. If the drain is rusty and won’t budge, call in the professionals for help.
